Are you on Snapchat yet? If you’re not, what’s the reason?
I signed up a long time ago, but I never started to use it until about a month ago. To be honest, it confused me! I had no idea how to use it, how to find people, how to grow a following. I had to have my 18 year old twin niece and nephew show me how to use all of its functions and tools. From that point (just under a month ago), I have been a Snapchat ninja and have grown a pretty rockin’ community!
I am now collaborating with a Snapchat friend from Canada and co-hosting Blabs, where we are discussing Snapchat topics on a weekly basis with other Snapchat fanatics! The first week I committed to Snapchat on a regular basis, I met someone through another Snapchat-ter and their #SadSingingSunday who lives in the same town as me. It turns out, we live right up the road from each other, about a mile away and we have plans to meet over some fresh roasted coffee that we both entered to win, you guessed it, right on Snapchat!
Now that I have been a seasoned Snapchat user, I cannot recommend it enough! I have numerous reasons you should be on Snapchat, but I will highlight my top 10 reasons. If you’re unsure about the platform and you only think it’s for weirdos and teenagers (or weird teenagers), think again. Let these reasons put your mind at ease!
10 Reasons YOU Should be on Snapchat RIGHT NOW:
1. Snapchat has rockin’ engagement
Snapchat has been debated to be the the platform with the largest amount of engagement. I believe this 150% and see this every day on my own account. My Snapchat has the smallest number of friends (yes, friends– not followers!) out of all social media platforms, yet has the largest engagement. Many of my blogger friends complain of the lack of engagement on their blogs and social media.. Well, my advice would be to make a fresh start and get on Snapchat and build that engagement.. Then– cross this over to your other accounts. It works!
2. Snapchat is a great way to build community.
My Snapchat community is like family, y’all! One big reason I believe this is because Snapchat is personal. It is not a place to be “sales-y.” It’s just a just a place where you can open up, be you, and connect with others in a very convenient way. “Snaps” are done in 10 seconds or less, so it doesn’t take a lot of time or effort. Plus, it’s fun with all the filters, emojis and coloring you can do on-screen.
3. Snapchat is a place to get creative.
Snapchat is a place where you can get creative with your “Snap Stories.” A fellow snap-chatter mentioned that it’s like Micro-vlogging. That is SO TRUE! You can tell amazing stories in just a handful of 10-second snaps. The topics of these stories can be whatever you desire. Just this morning, I told a musical snap story of my love and need for coffee in the morning. It wasn’t anything I had to think up before hand, I just thought, “Hey, my coffee-making would make a great snap story if I put some love music to it!” And away I went. Done. I also do something called “Saturday Night Snaps,” Where I post a series of still photos and allow my facial expressions and on-screen artwork do the talking. It’s a lot of fun and I get a lot of feedback from it!
4. Snapchat is easy.
Snapchat is easy to learn and super easy to use! Do not let your lack of knowledge about the platform scare you at all! If you need help setting up your Snapchat, I would love to assist. Send me an email at nessamakes at gmail dot com and let’s chat!
5. Snapchat is convenient.
If you’re thinking, “I don’t have time to do ANOTHER social media platform,” Let me stop you right there! Using the platform is just as convenient as posting photos to your Instagram or sending out a quick Tweet from your phone. A lot of influencers use Snapchat to give their friends behind-the-scene glimpses into their lives. Others use Snapchat as a creative outlet. Some even use it to encourage others and be encouraged. Do not let this platform overwhelm you. Use it!
6. Snapchat brings out authenticity.
Snapchat has to be the biggest social media platform for realness. It’s hard to fake your facial expressions and mannerisms via photos and video in 10 seconds. It’s such a raw platform, there’s not a whole lot you can do to cover things up or to make things look better. Plus, most of the people on the platform crave real relationships and real stories from others, so if you’re trying to fake it, they can totally tell! For me, it’s been a wonderful place for me to show my authenticity and realness. This experience is now spilling out onto my other social media spaces and that’s why I wanted to share this blog post.
7. Snapchat is a confidence boost.
Well, it has been at least for me. My friends on this platform, the encouragement and engagement they offer– is such a confidence boost for me! before 2015, I never really felt like my voice mattered in life, but with the help of a counselor and this app, my confidence has soared! It’s been a great way to share my voice with others in a non-overwhelming or scary way. There are lots of my Snapchat friends who feel this way about this platform, and it’s so refreshing to see. I am so glad I am not alone!
8. Snapchat is fresh.
It is a new, refreshing way of doing social media. And, it’s different for many of the reasons I mentioned above. Do not pass on this way of social media. Learn it, use it and love it!
9. Snapchat is not just for teenagers anymore.
Many of the comments I receive from people who don’t use Snapchat is that it’s NOT an app that they will ever use because they think it’s still an app for young kids. THIS IS FALSE. This app is so much more than that now, and has evolved into a beautiful thing that people of all ages are using. Do not let this stigma keep you from exploring what it can do for you personally and your business.
10. Snapchat offers so many opportunities.
Guess what? There are brands who actually have Snapchat accounts and use them! Taco Bell, Coca-Cola, Applebees– they’re all on there, and there are many more who use the platform to promote themselves and develop relationships with consumers. And guess what? It can do the same for you. Since I started using the platform, I have expanded myself and have become a true live streamer. It is always something I wanted to do, but I never felt like I could. Snapchat has shown me that I was wrong and I do have something important to say. It has opened up many doors to my business and has allowed me to meet people and network within and outside my niche. It has given me more clarity on what I want to do with my business and with my family. Don’t knock this app until you try it. Give it a chance!
I know you may think that it’s silly that an app has offered me so many things, but you guys, it is inspiring and changing lives! It is connecting people and boosting confidence and teaching people about true community. I am not alone in saying this– just ask all my engaged Snapchat friends how they feel about it and I guarantee they will say the same thing. Make time in your busy schedule to give this app a chance. If you try it and it’s not for you– then that’s OK! But, give it a chance. I am almost positive you won’t regret it. 🙂
